Difference Between Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga

Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga are two different styles of yoga that originated in India, and they differ in their approach, practices, and overall focus. Here are some of the main differences between Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga:


  • Approach: Hatha Yoga is a general term that encompasses various styles of yoga that focus on physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and relaxation techniques. It is typically slower-paced and emphasizes holding poses for longer periods of time, focusing on alignment and balance. Ashtanga Yoga, on the other hand, is a specific style of yoga that follows a structured series of asanas and breath-synchronized movements in a flowing sequence. It is often more physically demanding and fast-paced compared to Hatha Yoga.
  • Sequence: Hatha Yoga does not have a set sequence of poses and offers more flexibility for practitioners to choose poses and create their own practice. Ashtanga Yoga, on the other hand, has a fixed sequence of poses that are practiced in a specific order, with each pose building upon the previous one. The Ashtanga Yoga sequence is divided into different series, starting with the Primary Series, followed by the Intermediate Series, and so on, and practitioners progress to the next series as they advance in their practice.

  • Philosophy: Both Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga are rooted in traditional yogic philosophy, which includes principles of ethical conduct, mindfulness, and self-awareness. However, Ashtanga Yoga is known to place a greater emphasis on the philosophical aspects of yoga, including concepts such as the Eight Limbs of Yoga, which provide guidance on living a holistic and balanced life.
